Collection Management
The Library’s core collection of 7,000+ physical books and 200,000+ eBooks is made up of curriculum-based titles as well as popular fiction and leisure reading material. There are 2,000+ audiovisual titles in the collection. The serials collection includes two North Dakota daily newspapers and several weeklies, as well as a variety of magazines.
Library staff are responsible for all aspects of collection development including acquisition, cataloging, maintenance, and deselection of both the physical collection and the electronic resources available online. The collection is developed to support the evolving instructional needs of NDSCS departments and programs. The Library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system and the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
When procuring new material, the Library supports the freedom of academic inquiry. Current NDSCS students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to request material perceived to be beneficial to the entire NDSCS campus community and the Library’s carefully curated collection. To provide input regarding collection development, please complete the Suggestion for Purchase Form.
Course Reserves
The Library offers NDSCS instructors the option of placing items on Course Reserves to make material available for student use. Placing items on Course Reserves allows students to use the material (i.e. books, photocopies, videos, etc.) without having to purchase these items. Most Course Reserves items are available for in-library use only. When placing an item on Course Reserves, the instructor sets the loan period.
InterLibrary Loans
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the process by which a library requests material from, or supplies material to, another library.
Upon request, the Mildred Johnson Library will borrow material not available in the Library’s own collection from one of the other ODIN North Dakota academic libraries.
Guidelines and Policies
Because there are significant costs involved in providing ILL services, the following guidelines and policies are in place to ensure that these services can be continued economically:
- ILL services are provided to current NDSCS students, faculty, and staff.
- NDSCS library patrons must search for and use the resources available from the Mildred Johnson Library first, prior to placing an ILL request.
- NDSCS library patrons can submit online ILL requests via the Library’s catalog by signing in and filling out the Resource Sharing form available under How to get it in the item record.
- For physical item requests, patrons should allow at least one week for the material to arrive.
- NDSCS library patrons will be notified by e-mail or by phone when the requested materials are available for pick up at the Mildred Johnson Library circulation desk.
- ILL material must be returned to the Mildred Johnson Library circulation desk by the specified due date. The lending library sets the loan period and the fines and fees policies. Any late or lost fines/fees charged to the Mildred Johnson Library by the lending library will be passed on to the individual borrower. The individual borrower is responsible for repayment.
InterLibrary Loan request forms are available below. Print the applicable form and bring the request to the Mildred Johnson Library circulation desk or save the form to your computer and email it to NDSCS.Library@ndscs.edu with ILL Request indicated in the Subject line.
